Dr. Elst's approach to engaging in an extensive and scholarly study of Indian politics and ideology in the years immediately preceding independence and the years after its achievement in 1947 is the clarification of Godse's political testament.

It is well known that a Hindu militant shot and killed Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, just after India had earned independence and had also lost about a fourth of its territory to the newly formed state of Pakistan. The reason behind Nathuram Godse's murder is less well known. Except for the raw text of Godse's own trial defence statement, this issue has not yet been addressed in any publications.
