Samir Vij and Firdaus Khan initially meet on a January morning in 1938 as they pass by rows of perfume bottles in the ittar shop owned by his family in Lahore. The apprentices of the calligraphy and the perfumer fall in love during the ensuing years, thinking of their future together as well as with their ancient professions. Yet as the fight for Indian independence gains momentum, Partition decimates their cherished city. Samir, a Hindu, finds himself suddenly on the Indian side, while Firdaus, a Muslim, finds himself on the Pakistani side; their love is now outlawed. Samir and Firdaus, who are estranged from one another, take a number of fatal actions that will alter the path of their lives for all time.
