This is a story about how money can corrupt relationships and tear families apart. The protagonist, Vinuta, marries Girish and moves in with his family in Bangalore. She adjusts to her new life and takes care of her husband and in-laws, including her mother-in-law Gouramma, who constantly criticizes her.

However, when Girish's elder brother, Chandru, who lives in the US, gets married to a woman called the "Dollar Bahu," the family begins to compare Vinuta unfavorably to her sister-in-law, who is perceived as more successful and affluent due to her husband's high-earning job in the US. This causes Vinuta to feel inadequate and lose her peace of mind and health.

Gouramma eventually travels to the US to visit her son and daughter-in-law, where she experiences a more liberated lifestyle that is not governed by strict Indian middle-class norms. However, she also comes to realize that money cannot buy love and respect, which she values more than the material wealth that her family has gained.

Through this experience, Gouramma learns to appreciate Vinuta's contributions to the family and develops a new relationship with her daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, Vinuta must learn to forgive and forget the past and move forward with her family.

Overall, this story highlights the negative impact that money can have on relationships and the importance of valuing love and respect over material possessions.
