Anxious People is a novel by Fredrik Backman about eight strangers who are taken hostage by a failed bank robber during an open house apartment viewing. As the situation becomes more intense, the strangers begin to reveal their deepest secrets and long-hidden truths to one another. The characters include a wealthy bank director, a retired couple with a failing marriage, a young lesbian couple, and an eighty-year-old woman who has lived long enough to be unimpressed by the situation. As the police surround the apartment and the situation is broadcast live on television, the robber must decide whether to face the police or stay with the group of "impossible" people. Through witty dialogue and insights into human nature, the novel offers a reminder to be compassionate to all the anxious people we encounter in life.
