A man named Haa, who has spent 35 years working as a wastepaper and book compactor in a Czech police state, tells his touching and humorous experience in TOO LOUD A SOLITUDE. He has unknowingly gained an education while compacting, making it difficult for him to distinguish between his own ideas and those that are drawn from his books. He has saved numerous people from the hydraulic press's jaws, and as a result, his home is now completely occupied. He is both its offender and its destroyer of the written word. Yet he can only go down with his ship when a new automatic press renders his position obsolete. This wacky romp celebrates indestructibility and is a protest against governmental repression and censorship.
