Bombay serves as the capital of British India in 1892. Captain Jim Agnihotri, who is recuperating in the nearby Poona military hospital after a battle on the rugged northern frontier, has nothing better to do than reread Sherlock Holmes stories and peruse the daily papers. Captain Jim is drawn to a case that has been dubbed the century's worst crime: In broad daylight, two people fell from the busy university's clock tower. Captain Jim contacts the Parsee family and is hired to conduct an investigation into what transpired that tragic afternoon after being moved by Adi, the widower of one of the deaths, and his conviction that his wife and sister did not commit suicide.
