An anthropologist is needed after the neatly dissected body of a woman, which is too "decomposed for conventional autopsy," is found in the ground of an abandoned abbey in Montreal, Canada.
The case is entrusted to Dr. Temperance Brennan, the Quebec province's director of forensic anthropology, who has been investigating recent disappearances in the city. Brennan is certain that a serial killer is at work despite Detective Claudel, who is in charge of the case, having a deep level of scepticism. After more bodies have been discovered, Claudel is ultimately persuaded by her forensic knowledge. Brennan starts an inquiry, but her relentless questioning endangers people who are closest to her.
