When Hercule Poirot and his friend Arthur Hastings travel to Merlinville-sur-Mer, France, to meet their client Paul Renauld, they learn from the police that Renauld had been discovered that morning, stabbed in the back with a letter opener, and then dumped in a freshly dug grave next to a nearby golf course. The suspects Poirot has cause to believe include Renauld's wife Eloise, his son Jack, Renauld's close neighbour Madame Daubreuil, the enigmatic "Cinderella" he recently met, and an unidentified visitor from the previous day. Poirot's investigative skills ultimately prevail over the cunning of a perpetrator whose deception and motivations are all but difficult to discern.
