When Hercule Poirot and his associate Arthur Hastings travel to Merlinville-sur-Mer, France, to meet their client Paul Renauld, they learn from the police that Renauld had been discovered that morning, stabbed in the back with a letter opener, and then dumped in a freshly dug grave next to a nearby golf course. Eloise Renauld, Jack Renauld, Madame Daubreuil, the mysterious "Cinderella" Hastings has recently met, and an unidentified visitor from the previous day are all suspects Poirot has reason to believe are involved. They are also among the plausible suspects. The wiles of an attacker whose deception and motivations are almost—but not quite—impossible to discern are ultimately defeated by Poirot's investigative skills.
