Poirot never quite appears to have a vacation, despite his best efforts. In this tale, the protagonist is in Devon, the county where Agatha Christie was born. Naturally, a murdered woman is discovered among the scantily dressed sunbathers. It was common to see the stunning, tan Arlena Stuart lying face down on a beach. Stuart loved the sun. However, this time there was no sun because she had been strangled. Hercule Poirot had noticed sexual tension in the air of the seaside resort ever since Arlena had been there. Could this alleged "crime of passion" perhaps have been something more sinister and planned out?
