The keys Oyeyemi uses to unlock different aspects of her characters' lives not only promise more labyrinths on the other side but also open doors to a house, a heart, or a secret. One unique key in "Books and Roses" unlocks a library, a garden, and hints about the destinies of at least two lovers. In "Is Your Blood as Red as This," a pupil at a puppeteering school's heart is unlocked by an unexpected key. A "house of locks," where doors can only be closed with a key, is the setting of "'Sorry' Doesn't Sweeten Her Tea," with unexpected, unanticipated happenings. A key locks a magical diary in "If a Book Is Locked There's Probably a Good Reason for That Don't You Think" as well (for good reason).
