Reinventing Romantic Poetry
A fresh perspective on the Russian literary scene of the nineteenth century can be found in Reinventing Romantic Poetry. When Russian women tried to write Romantic poetry, they discovered that they had to reinvent poetic conventions of the time in order to express themselves as women and as poets. Famous poets like Aleksandr Pushkin worked within a male-centered Romantic aesthetic—the poet as a bard or sexual conqueror; nature as a mother or mistress; the poet's muse as an idealised woman.
