The Poetry of Statius
Thebaid and the incomplete Achilleid are two epics by the Roman poet P. Papinius Statius, who also wrote a sizable body of sporadic verse (Silvae). The originality and bravery of this poetry's answers to both the Greek and Latin literary tradition and the modern Roman world are now more widely recognised and admired than ever before. It was formerly dismissed as derivative or decadent. The presentations presented at a symposium on Statius (Amsterdam 2005) by eminent academics from Europe and North America are included in this edition. Due to Statius' extensive understanding of Greek and Latin tragedy, his quick storytelling, psychological insight, great eulogies, and negative views on both gods and humans, these papers show how fascinating Statius' poetry is.
