The young adult book Thirteen Reasons Why, written by Jay Asher in 2007, tells the tale of Hannah Baker, a freshman in high school, and the thirteen reasons she kills herself. Hannah leaves a trail of seven double-sided cassette cassettes describing the 13 particular persons and occasions she holds responsible for her death. These cassette cassettes are sent out two weeks after her passing, along with instructions on how to pass them on to the next person on the tape. These cassettes, which are narrated by Hannah herself and from the perspective of Clay, her classmate and the ninth person to get the tapes, tell the story of Hannah's life.Hannah Baker, the primary character, was modelled by a close cousin of author Jay Asher who made an attempt at suicide.

Thirteen Reasons Why has gained a lot of attention since it was published in 2007. Thirteen Reasons Why was published internationally and had been a New York Times bestseller for more than three years as of 2014. The novel's popularity was also met with criticism; from 2010 to 2019, it was the third-most-banned book in the United States. A Netflix original series based on the novel was also launched in March 2017.
