Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author Joseph Lelyveld's 2011 biography of Indian political and spiritual leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, published by Alfred A Knopf.
The narrative alternates between Gandhi's period in South Africa and his return to India as Mahatma Gandhi.
During his early years in South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi had a sexual connection with Hermann Kallenbach, a German-Jewish bodybuilder, and made harsh statements about black Africans, according to the book Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India.

One critique is Lelyveld's use of documented evidence and educated opinion to highlight Gandhi's contact with a Prussian architect, who the Indian claimed of having "got physical training from [Eugen] Sandow [the founder of modern bodybuilding]." "Your photograph (the sole one) is on my mantelpiece in the bedroom," Gandhi wrote to Kallenbach in a letter from London in 1909, according to Lelyveld's probe. The mantelpiece is on the other side of the bed... The goal of which is to demonstrate to you and me how totally you have seized control of my body. This is a vengeful form of enslavement." Several personal letters were later purchased by the Indian government.
