Baroness Orczy's debut novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, was released in 1905 and is the first in a series of historical fiction. It was written after her theatre play of the same name, which had premiered in Nottingham in 1903, had a long run in London.
Following the onset of the French Revolution, the storey takes place during the Reign of Terror. The title is the pen name of the film's hero and protagonist, a gallant Englishman who saves nobles from the execution. Sir Percy Blakeney has a double life as a rich fop who is also a skilled swordsman, master of disguise, and escape artist. Only a small group of guys who aid him are aware of his true identity. The red pimpernel is his emblem, which is a simple flower.

The play premiered on January 5, 1905, at the New Theatre in London's West End, and quickly became a hit with British audiences, playing over 2,000 times and becoming one of the city's most popular productions. The novel was an immediate hit after the play's popularity, garnering Orczy a following of readers in the United Kingdom and across the world.
Orczy's notion of a bold hero who hides his true personality behind a timid or impotent demeanour has stood the test of time. Within a few decades, Zorro, Doctor Syn, the Shadow, the Spider, the Phantom, Superman, and Batman followed, and the motif is still common in serial fiction today.
