Of Human Bondage
W. Somerset Maugham's work Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. Although Maugham declared, "This is a novel, not an autobiography; though much in it is personal, much is pure imagination," it is widely considered to be his masterpiece and to be heavily autobiographical in character. Maugham's work was initially titled Beauty from Ashes, but he eventually opted on a title based on a part of Spinoza's Ethics. Of Human Bondage was placed No. 66 on the Modern Library's list of the 100 finest English-language novels of the twentieth century.
