In 1826, James Fenimore Cooper published The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757, a historical romance. It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy, and the most well-known among modern readers. The sequel, The Pathfinder, was released 14 years later, in 1840. The Last of the Mohicans takes place in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years' War's North American theatre), when France and Great Britain fought for dominance of North America. Both the French and the British employed Native American friends throughout this battle, although the French were especially reliant since they were outmanned by the British in the Northeast border territories. The novel's events take place in the days leading up to, during, and after the Siege of Fort William Henry.
